Buckfast bees

image002Unfortunately the legendary Buckfast bee is no longer a reality at the Abbey and they are using (?) Carniolans.  The apiarists were kind enough to take me to inspect some nucs that they had recently sold – a couple were suspected of being drone layers which turned out to be true.  Here’s Zac finding the bad news.

Attended microscopy course at Buckfast Abbey (legendary alma mater of British bee breeding).  Here’s Brother Adam’s microscope

Had a ball learning to prepare pollen slides and identify pollen in honey samples (sadly no eucalyptus but this can wait for return to Oz).  Also found Nosema in a sample of bees from a diseased colony.

And here’s the teaching apiary at the Abbey.image003
